Prayer Has Never Come Easy — At Least Not for Me
Published August 1, 2026 | Reading time: 7 minutes
I want to tell you something I probably shouldn't admit about myself: I have never been a good pray-er.
And I don't say that to sound humble or self-deprecating. I say it because it's true, and I think it might make you feel a little less alone if you're in the same boat.
For years, I treated prayer like a checklist. Morning prayer. Mealtime prayer. Night prayer. Done. Move on. If I got through the motions, I figured God was satisfied. And maybe He was — but I sure wasn't.
The Year Everything Fell Apart
Somewhere around 2019, things started going wrong. Not all at once — just steadily, like a slow leak in a tire. Jobs lost. Relationships strained. Health scares that kept me up at night. Decisions that needed answers but came without any.
I went to church. I read my Bible. I even started a prayer journal — you know, the kind with prompts like "What are you grateful for today?" and "What are your prayer requests?" with pretty little checkboxes.
Here's the thing: I filled out every page. Every single day. But I wasn't praying. I was performing.
And I was exhausted.
When I Stopped Pretending
The shift happened on a random Tuesday morning. I sat down with my journal, opened to today's page, and just... couldn't write anything.
Not because I had no thoughts. But because everything I was about to write felt fake. "Dear God, thank you for the beautiful sunrise and the coffee. Amen." Really? That's it? That's what I have for you?
So I wrote the truth instead:
"God, I don't even know what to say anymore. I'm tired. I'm scared. I don't feel you. And honestly? I'm not sure why I'm even doing this. But here I am. So... what now?"
I stared at those words for a long time. Then I closed the journal and went to make more coffee. Nothing exploded. The sky didn't fall. But something inside me shifted — just a little.
Turns out, God could handle my honesty. Turns out, that was actually prayer.
What I've Learned Since
I'm not saying my prayer life is perfect now. It isn't. Some days I still rush through it. Some days I forget entirely. But here are the things that have helped:
1. Stop trying to sound spiritual
You don't need to use "thee" and "thou." You don't need to end every sentence with "in Jesus' name." You just need to show up. God isn't grading your vocabulary.
2. Let yourself be angry
The Psalms are full of people yelling at God. David. Jeremiah. Even Jesus on the cross. If you're mad, tell Him. He can take it.
3. Try writing it down — even if it's messy
A notebook, your phone, the back of an envelope — doesn't matter. Getting it out of your head and onto paper changes something. It makes it real.
4. Read slowly
Pick one verse. Read it three times. What jumps out? Why that word? What's it saying to you right now? That's where the conversation starts.
5. Forgive yourself for the dry spells
Sometimes you won't feel anything. Sometimes it'll feel like talking to a wall. That's okay. Keep showing up anyway. Faith isn't a feeling — it's a choice to stay in the room.
Your Turn
So here's my question for you: What does your prayer life actually look like?
Not the version you share at church. Not the Instagram caption. The real one. The messy one. The one where you sometimes forget to pray for three days straight.
I'd love to hear your story — the good, the bad, and the "I-have-no-idea-what-I'm-doing" parts. Drop a comment below. Let's be honest with each other for once.
And if you want some structure but still want to keep it real, I put together a free prayer journal template that doesn't ask you to pretend. It just asks you to be honest.
